Decisive Leadership

Genesis Chapter 14 is a rich narrative that offers several important lessons. Here are some key takeaways:
A. Courageous and Decisive Leadership: Abram (later Abraham) demonstrates remarkable courage and decisive leadership when he learns that his nephew Lot has been captured. Despite being significantly outnumbered, he gathers his trained men and allies and pursues the victorious kings to rescue Lot. This highlights the importance of acting swiftly and boldly, especially when those we care about are in danger.
A. Loyalty and Family Ties: Abram's immediate response to Lot's capture underscores the strong bond of loyalty and family ties, as an extension of his leadership style. Even though Lot had previously chosen to separate from Abram and settle in a potentially dangerous area (Sodom), Abram risked everything to rescue him. This emphasizes the value of family and the responsibility we have to one another.
C. The Importance of Preparedness: Leaders are always prepared. Abram's ability to mobilize 318 "trained men" suggests that he was not only a man of faith but also a prudent and prepared leader. He had a disciplined household, ready to respond to unexpected challenges. This teaches us the value of being prepared, both physically and spiritually, for whatever life may bring.
D. Acknowledging God's Sovereignty: Abram attributed his victory to God's intervention, Despite the overwhelming odds. This reminds us that ultimate victory comes from God, and we should trust in His power and sovereignty even in the face of daunting circumstances. "The battle is the LORD's" (1 Samuel 17:47) is a recurring theme in the Bible, and this chapter provides an early example.
E. Righteousness and Humility in Victory: After his triumph, Abram is met by two kings: the king of Sodom and Melchizedek, king of Salem (who is also a priest of God Most High). Abram gives Melchizedek a tenth of all the spoils, acknowledging God's role in his victory and recognizing Melchizedek's spiritual authority. (This is the first mention of tithing in the Bible and highlights the principle of acknowledging God as the source of our blessings).
F. Ethical Wealth Source: Abram refuses to take any spoils from the king of Sodom, stating that he does not want it said that the king of Sodom made him rich. This demonstrates Abram's integrity, his reliance on God alone for provision, and his refusal to be associated with ungodly influence. It teaches us to be careful about the sources of our wealth and to ensure that our motives are pure.
G. Consequences of Association: Leaders know the value of associates. Lot's presence in Sodom led to his capture and involvement in the war. While Abram rescued him, Lot's continued return to Sodom (as seen in later chapters) ultimately led to further difficulties. This serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of associating with ungodly environments and the potential consequences of compromising one's values for worldly advantages.
In summary, Genesis 14 offers profound lessons on courageous leadership, family loyalty, preparedness, divine assistance, and the importance of maintaining integrity and faith in God amidst worldly temptations.

The Essence of Leadership: Honoring God

Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

A once-great Christian nation—respected for its leadership, scientific excellence, and technological innovation—sought to reclaim its lost position in the world. They gathered under a powerful slogan, aiming to restore their past glory. Yet, in their pursuit of greatness, they overlooked the very foundation of true leadership: wisdom of honoring God.
Wisdom, as Scripture reminds us, begins with honoring God. They forgot His promise: "But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall." – Malachi 4:2
The act of honoring God was once the cornerstone of their greatness. It remains the cornerstone of a purposeful life for anyone. True leadership, whether within a nation or in our personal lives, flows from a heart that reveres and obeys Him.
How to Honor God in Leadership and Life
1. With Our Heart (Inward Devotion)
Love God above all – Give Him priority in every decision.
Trust and obey Him – Respect His authority through faithfulness.
Humble yourself – A contrite spirit is valued by God (Isaiah 66:2).
Practice gratitude – Acknowledge His blessings (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Seek His presence – Spend time in prayer, reflection, and His Word.
2. With Our Lips (Verbal Expression)
Praise and worship – Honor Him through songs and declarations.
Give thanks – Express gratitude openly and often.
Guard your words – Speak life, encouragement, and truth.
3. With Our Life (Actions and Behavior)
Live with integrity – Maintain honesty and ethics, even in secret (Proverbs 11:3).
Use your talents for His glory – Serve with excellence and purpose.
Be a witness – Inspire others through your faith-filled actions (Matthew 5:16).
4. In Specific Areas of Life
In our work – Strive for excellence and diligence in our professions.
In our relationships – Treat others with love, respect, and kindness.
In our home – Foster a God-honoring environment through prayer and hospitality (Romans 13:1).
5. Through Faith and Humility
Walk humbly before God – "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)
Fear the Lord (reverence and awe) – "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." (Proverbs 9:10)
Put God first in all things – "Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (Matthew 6:33)
Honoring God is not just about outward actions—it's about a life transformed by His love and grace.
True leadership therefore, is not found in ambition alone, but in the wisdom to honor God first. May we remember that greatness is not reclaimed by slogans, but by faith, humility, and obedience to Him.

Godly Surrender

Many a Sunday morning we stand up and sing the song - "All to Jesus I surrender". But do we truly mean that? Do we truly surrender all?
In the quoted passage we have a near perfect young man, who did everything God expected but could not surrender.
Today let us think, have we truly surrendered? - what does surrender look like?
First and foremost, surrender needs us to let go of the control we want over our lives. Realize that that fantastic job, that promotion or a great business are not because of our abilities but because of Gods blessings. Therefore, they are not our priority even though they may give us economic power. It involves recognizing that one is not self-sufficient, and that divine grace is essential. And divine grace comes from divine wisdom.
It means letting go of the desire to dictate the course of one's life and trusting that God's plan is superior. It involves a profound act of yielding one's will and control to divine authority.
In practice this means that we become executors of Gods will in our lives rather than decision makers. It means we put every situation, every day, every problem, every solution, every honor at Gods feet first.
This is not to be confused with revering God or respecting God. There is a difference between respecting God and making Him first in our lives.
When we make God first, we may start our day by asking God - what would you have me do today? Or how do you want me to act in "x" situation? Essentially start the day by passing control of everything for the day to God.
Surrender therefore requires humility, acknowledging one's own limitations and dependence on God.
This may involve making changes in one's behavior, attitudes, and priorities to align with divine principles and a willingness to accept His authority.
In theory we all do that: in practice maybe we don't.
King David consulted God before taking any action. Do we consult God say, before a meeting? If the meeting is critical we may pray and ask for His guidance and help. But do we ask His will? No. We state our will and may we end it by saying - "but your will be done". That to my mind is not total surrender. It is "grudging acceptance or maybe defeated acceptance".
Therefore, total surrender also includes an "embracement" of Gods decision, His wisdom and His will, with happiness, joy and priority because we place our trust in Him more than in our own abilities.
What is the outcome? Ultimately, surrender will bring inner peace and freedom. By relinquishing the burden of control, one can experience a sense of release and trust. It's like sitting in a chauffeur driven car and driven through chaotic traffic as opposed to driving and navigating that traffic ourselves.
Surrender therefore is good for us. It not only helps us navigate this life peacefully but helps to build our next life as well by building a relationship with God, with Jesus and with the Holy Spirit.
Finally, It is important to understand that surrender is often a process, and not a one time event. It is something that is worked on daily.
In essence, surrendering to Jesus or God is about placing one's life in divine hands, trusting in divine guidance, and seeking to live in accordance with divine will.

My Covid Diaries: A Nightmare turned Miracle!

Today we share a short diary of a Covid survivor – a senior lady in Delhi, India, who calls her experience “a nightmare turned miracle”. We share with you the Covid Diary of Ms. S. Massey, a retired School Principal, mother and grandmother. She credits ONLY God’s grace and mercy that she is able to share her story today – in her own words:

“9th May, 2021: 10 PM : Tested positive for Covid, asymptomatic. Being 70 years of age and an asthma patient, I was advised hospitalization. In spite of non availability of beds and oxygen, it was with God’s grace I was able to get an admission to a well known hospital. Tests showed about a 20% infection and treatment was started.
10th May, 2021: Slight improvement, but still asymptomatic.
11th May, 2021: Stable and ready to be discharged and to quarantine at home! Discharge procedure starts. My happiness knew no bounds and all friends, family, church people who had been praying for me heaved a sigh of relief and thanked God.
But, during the day my condition deteriorated and I was sent back into ICU. An emergency X-Ray of the lungs showed drastic worsening and my Oxygen level decreased to dangerous levels. People started [raying for me all over again, being informed and requested by my son.
As my condition worsened, I felt myself drift into a deep dark valley and as if I was slipping into another world. I lost the time and days and nights passed without any awareness. I had no consciousness, no sensation and no sound. I underwent a tricostmy surgery and lost the use of my vocal cords.
I must admit that I probably posed a huge challenge to the team of doctors, God bless them for not giving up on me and working under the direction of our Lord.
With no sense of what was going on, I do remember seeing my late husband, sitting on the highest seat of a stadium. I stretched out my arm asking him to hold me as I was gong to join him but he turned his face from me. I also saw my elder sister and brother in law walking head of me, so I called out to them as well to stop and wait for me but they don’t. (I did not know that both had already passed of Covid together). These memories haunt me even today.
I saw different churches, ones which I never knew even existed, new priests giving sermons from beautiful pulpits, reading scripture and choirs of people dressed in purple and white. Churches with different European architectures, including Greek and roman designs, stained glass windows. I also saw the baby Jesus in His manger, huge candles burning as group of angels sing and bow down with their wings covering their faces. The whole scene before me was pure, powerful and spiritual. The environment was filled with a blue hue, I have never seen in my life and I cannot explain the serene beauty of that place where I was.
Suddenly I saw water, as clear as crystal, gushing from a beautiful golden gate, guarded by two angels, and then I am standing in my home church behind the lectern, facing the cross and saying – Lord send me back as I have to preach Jesus – as the only God, the true god and a miracle God.
It was not a plea, or a begging tone but the tone and voice of a fighter, which later scared me as to how could I behave like that in front of God? From childhood I had been taught to petition God but not like this!
4th of August, 2021: Suddenly a strong beam of light emanated from that cross and engulfed me. My conscious date changed from the 11th of May to the 4th of August, 2021, the day God chose to send me back and the date I was finally discharged, after 3 months on a ventilator!
My weight had reduced from 68 Kg to 40 Kg, paralyzed below the waist, darkened skin and on a wheelchair. I was hardly able to speak.
I had my first review with the doctor one month later when he said – Ma’am you are a miracle. A Covid warrior. I wanted to tell him the warrior was not me but Jesus. I was only the medium to glorify His name.
While the Doctor put me on physio for 6 months, I was up in two months and able to walk in 3. God healed me to keep my promise – to glorify the name of Jesus.
Today, I keep that promise everyday – to witness, to pray for others who maybe going through a bad patch, to teach faith and trust.

I do hope my story will also strengthen you, and inspire you to Jesus Christ – our Saviour and Lord”.

Salvation is not an Event

Salvation is not a singular event, so we shouldn't treat it as such. It is an ongoing process that began at the cross and continues throughout our earthly lives, involving faith, repentance, and transformation. Lent plays an important role along the way.

Phil Ashey, pastor of South Riding Church in Virginia, observed, "Our culture is so focused on an event rather than a process. Even as evangelicals, I think we've been trapped by the idea that salvation is a one-time event, like a sale that we've got to close. But often, it's a process in which people ask questions again and again and approach God repeatedly to consider faith. I see Lent as a door—an entryway—for people to connect or reconnect with Jesus."

Engaging in this process means approaching God, understanding His will and power, and reflecting on our faith in Him. Lent offers a unique opportunity to dedicate time toward this reflection. Over these 40 days, we examine our lives, confront our baggage and sinfulness, and commit to change. It is a time for corrective actions that lead to spiritual regeneration, for salvation itself hinges on being reborn or transformed. This journey doesn't happen in an instant or even in a single season—it unfolds in steps. Lent provides the space to take these steps, whether by shedding harmful habits or cultivating new ones, while spending meaningful time with God.

For some, Lent may extend beyond the traditional 40 days and span an entire year, as they continually evaluate and strive to deepen their spiritual lives. For others, the concentrated period of Lent is vital. Regardless of timing, the effort and outcome matter most.

Above all, we must remember that Jesus sacrificed Himself for the salvation we seek. This process calls for sincerity, earnestness, and a wholehearted commitment to change.

A Life Turned Upside Down: Pastor Rajiv's Mid-Week Message

Since we are talking about Covid days this week, and you think Covid turned our lives upside down, well, think of this scenario:

A strange person appears before you, someone whom you have never seen before, stands before you in your room, and starts talking to you about your future - pretty freaky!! isn’t it?
Today I want us to wind back 2025 years and look at the life of a 16 year old Jewish teenager in Israel. This teenager had her life turned completely upside down by the visit of a stranger, in circumstances similar to what we mentioned.
We are first introduced to her by name in Matthew’s gospel but we are told of her by Isaiah in his prophecy ‘Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel’ - Isaiah 7:14
So here we have Mary a 16 year old teenager living the normal life of a 16 year old. The Bible does not specify anything about her life prior to Gabriel’s visit but I am sure we can picture the life of a 16 year old village girl living in those times.
She would be helping her mother in the kitchen, maybe taking care of younger siblings, if she had any, helping with the household chores and of course playing with other village girls her own age.
And, to complicate matters, she was pledged in marriage to Joseph the village carpenter, which seemed to be a normal practice in Jewish families. And now, into this ‘normal’ scenario enters the angel Gabriel, and turns Mary’s world upside down completely.
Not only that, the message that was given her must completely baffled her: “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favour with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Imagine the enormity of that message and it’s effect on her: (And you thought Covid had turned you upside down?)
In her confused and fearful state of mind she was only able to manage the one question which was at the top of her mind. The passage says “how will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
Mary’s question would have arisen from the social and legal norms of that time. If she was found to be with child out of wedlock she would be branded an adulteress she could be stoned to death as per Jewish law
And what would Joseph her fiancée think?
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God - Vs 35
Mary’s question was not a question of doubt but a question of faith. Because asking in faith is very different to asking in doubt. Gabriel’s message puzzled her but she did not dismiss it in unbelief.
Mary’s response at the end of the passage is a demonstration of her faith, her obedience and her complete submission to God’s will.
Mary’s response is what should be the response of every believer to God’s calling even though His calling will usually turn your world upside down, making life inconvenient and maybe even dangerous, as it did hers and as it did the apostles.
Mary’s calling was not an easy task that she had been called for as we read along the gospels and even beyond when we see Mary’s suffering and hardship which finally culminated in seeing her son dying a gruesome death on a Roman cross.
Mary demonstrated to us how we should respond when God calls us to do His work, in any circumstance. Think of all the health workers during Covid – who bravely took up their calling to help people. Like Mary they did not shirk or make excuses out of fear - But through it all, put aside all doubts and all questions and all insecurities and responded to the calling with faith.
Today it will be well for each of us to think: how will I respond to God’s calling? How will I react to my world being turned upside down? I may lose friends and family, or wealth or time etc. But what will my response be? Will we, like Mary, look on it in faith? Or look at it in doubt?

The Reality of Psalm 91: A Covid Story

The COVID times were extraordinary. Today it is five years, or half a decade, that it was declared a Pandemic. As of April 2024, the virus had infected over 704 million people worldwide, and the number of deaths had reached almost 7.5 million. During the peak, one saw relatives, friends & neighbors drop like flies. Tragedy was all around us.

My family and I had been stuck in two different countries, 6000 miles apart, away from our home and each other. Yet were brought together, under His shadow against mighty odds and impossibilities. While thousands, nay millions, fell at the sides, we were kept safe in a safe country, in the safe home of a Pastor and his family. COVID was all around us, yet did not come near us. Our daughter in India too remained safe as we tried to come back and she tried to get back to us.

Over those three years, as our savings disappeared, business dwindled and stopped, we never went hungry or in want. Everything was provided for by our God. The destruction of those days could not destroy us.

That is when we realized the reality of God as He spoke to us through Psalm 91 - we practically lived it!

“Psalm 91:10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling”.

We lived the complete Psalm 91 day by day.

One particular incident cannot be forgotten. Due to a sudden and definitive requirement of 1 million in cash, in a foreign land, with no access to our funds (the particular account did not have internet access), we panic. As we lay in agony and fear, the bell chimed in my phone indicating a mail had come. With great dread I opened it and lo- there was a mail from a strange id known as the Messianic Bible group. The subject was - Fear not for the Lord is always with you. Addressed to me by name. I do not know how it came for I was not part of any Messianic group, nor registered for any mails. Never before had I even received a mail from these people. As I read that mail, a great sense of calm and peace came over me. It started with a quote

“Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

My heart stopped pounding. I have never forgotten that because I believe it was God reassuring me.

Later that night a thought came into my mind - talk to the bank manager (he too was a Christian). I did talk to him the next day and without the necessary documents he transferred the money. Problem solved.

Then came the third wave - as our business collapsed, customers threatened us, friends became foes, legal notices were sent, business destroyed, Covid raged on and on and we continued to overcome. For us Psalms 91:13 came alive – “Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet”.

Though we had some ground support, that too finally faded away. How long can anyone support you without finance? Nights were spent in worry about the future: would we see our home again? would ever again be reunited as a family? But through it all, we learned to trust Him. Again Psalm 91 gave us the assurance of protection and deliverance. As Covid struck the world again and again, Psalm 91 assured us

"You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you".

After three years we finally made it back home. Broken in all respects but happy. Happy that we had found the God in all His glory. He delivered us - literally.

“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name".

We survived.

This does not mean life was or is trouble free. It means we survive and live on His grace. On His protection. We called upon Him and He answered.

"For He gave His angels charge over us, who kept us in all our ways and did not let us dash our foot against any stone".

We leave this testimony not just as a personal account of survival and deliverance but as an invitation to discover the immense power and grace available through Jesus Christ. In the face of life's uncertainties and trials, His love remains steadfast, and His promises offer unshakable assurance.

This journey has taught us that while life may never be free from hardships, His grace sustains us, His protection surrounds us, and His presence uplifts us. Through the storms, through the losses, and through the fear, His word remained true: “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.”

May this story inspire you to trust in His providence and find refuge in His shadow. In Him, you can tread through adversity, rise above despair, and walk with unwavering faith, knowing that His angels watch over you. Our experience is not just a tale of survival, but a celebration of a victorious life—a life anchored in the power and love of Jesus Christ.

We have made Psalm 91 our go to prayer because we have seen and experienced the reality of those verses. My family & I will never forget that we have passed through the valley of the shadow of death & who's staff guided us through.

(In the picture is Psalm 91 and is downloadable as a prayer, should you need it).

The Atheist: A Short Story

This is a story about Zaver, an atheist and scientist, and a strange journey. Zaver had to travel to another city to present a lecture on Natural Phenomena, a journey of about two hours from his home. As he boarded the train and took his seat, he started thinking about his lecture, trying to remember examples he could use.
As the train stopped at the next station, a man boarded and sat on the seat next to Zaver. "Good morning, Zaver," he smiled and said.
Startled, Zaver smiled and asked, "Do I know you?"
"No, Zaver, you don't. But I know you from the beginning."
"Ah, you must have known my parents then."
"Yes, I did. In fact, your whole family knew me well. I am a close family friend."
"Oh, you must be from the church. They were regulars at the church."
"Yes. I was in the church too. But I don't see you in church these days?"
"No. I am a scientist and an atheist. I don't believe in God."
"Oh? Well, I suppose scientists do have all the answers, but I'm just curious to know why you don't believe in God. After all, your whole family were very strong believers."
"Well, I think God is just a figment of our minds when we want to explain what we don't understand. Those incredible stories in the Bible are just that. Stories without any credibility! Take that one of the parting of the Red Sea. Come on... I bet that river was shallow and coincidentally there was a flash flood as the Egyptian army tried to cross. Then the story of a dead man coming back to life. Preposterous!"
"Ah, I see you really know your Bible. You really can explain things logically as well."
"Yes," said Zaver, "I was a regular at church and Sunday school till age 16 when I realized that the Bible was nothing but a book on the improbable."
"Oh, I see. But tell me, said the man, "how heavy is an airplane?"
"Why, it would be about 800,000 pounds or more. Why?"
"I was just wondering how an 800,000-pound object can fly in the air. You scientists and engineers really are brilliant."
"Well, to get an 800,000-pound plane off the ground and fly, you need jet engines and fuel and a lot of engineering. It's... complicated."
"Yes, it does seem to be. But tell me another thing, how heavy is a cloud?"
"A cloud? Why, at the very least about a million pounds, going up to about a billion pounds for a very, very large and heavy cloud."
"Then, Zaver, tell me how does a cloud, which is more than the weight of an aircraft, float and move around in the sky without any jets, or engines, or engineering, or any other visible means of propulsion? How come a cloud doesn't fall out of the sky?"
"Well, sir, that's nature. It's the vapor from the earth which causes heat, which causes the cloud to expand so that it becomes lighter than its surrounding air, and hence it can fly. It's complicated."
"Yes, I am sure it is. But you talked about the parting of the Red Sea. Just FYI, there is a scientific explanation for that as well. But just for you to know, science is another word for 'creation.' But creation minus justice."
"But about parting the Red Sea, it was done by a 'negative' storm surge caused by a Medicane. So you see, it was not all that improbable as your mind thinks it is."
"And as far as the clouds go, where does the vapor come from? Who created nature?"
"Now to answer a very serious question you posed - can a dead man become alive? You are a scientist and you must have read or heard about the delayed return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Of course, this does not apply to a God. How about you get science to explain why Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valley shoots blood-red water into a river? Maybe it will explain Egypt. Remember, explain the why and not the how. Similarly, Hessdalen Lights in Norway, Catatumbo lightning in Venezuela, the glow worm caves, or stones that float and sail."
Zaver smiled and was about to interject when the man said, "Well, the next stop is mine. I hope you do well and all the very best for your lecture."
He got up and started to leave.
Zaver said, "I hope we meet again."
"Oh, I am sure we will."
With that, he got off the train as Zaver called out after him, "Sir, what is your name?"
The man looked back and smiled and disappeared in the crowd.
As the train moved on, Zaver lapsed into a thoughtful silence, his mind full of his strange encounter and what the man had said.
When he awoke, his station had come, and he got off to be met by his old friend Abe. They hugged warmly, and Abe said, "Zaver, you look great. Got a facial today, did you? Hope to meet someone interesting?"
"No," said Zaver. "Why do you say that?"
"You seem to have a glow on your face I've never seen before. But let's hurry or we will be late."
Zaver ascended the dais as he was introduced and took his position at the speaker's lectern. He opened his notes on "Social Constructionism" & began his speech. He stared at the paper and began speaking, without looking at his notes.
"Science, my friends, is nothing but an attempt of man to understand creation. The Big Bang Theory is a good explanation of how it all started, but it does not explain why it started and who started that first bang... recently, we discovered the world's oldest pyramid in Indonesia. It is perfectly sculpted, but, and here is the shocker: there is no evidence of human intervention. Who made that pyramid and why? How is not important. One day, science will find out for sure, but till then, my friends, we can only wonder and believe..."
As he continued his speech, he locked eyes with the audience, and especially one man, the man he met on the train, who sat in the middle, just smiling and nodding.
Zaver never referred to his notes again during his speech. He spoke as if in a dream as he continued, "...you see, there is no technology which has no single point of failure without duplication and redundancy. But, oddly enough, creation has no single point of failure and no redundancy. There has to be a creator of all this ... who engineered this world - from the tallest mountains to the tiniest bit of grass and gave each one a purpose in the creation. Science has maybe understood but 10% of creation. Who controls it and how? Can these creatures we know so well communicate? Some studies say they do. We do not know. I do remember a passage from some book which said, and I quote..."
"And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying, 'To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!'"
As Zaver went on, the entire audience sat spellbound, shocked by his thoughts and revelations. Only one man smiled through it all and then slipped away into the darkness of the hall.
At the conference lunch, Zaver was thronged by the attendees who had some serious questions. While he tried to answer them he himself had so many questions to ask, so many ideas and doubts. His head throbbed as if with some newfound discovery. He desperately sought the strange man but he was nowhere to be found.
As he left the hall, Zaver smiled to himself. He knew he would meet that man again and he looked forward to it. Suddenly he stopped. He just remembered from which book he had quoted that passage. It was the Bible.
Another passage wafted into his head, a memory from his childhood:
"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come".
Zaver then knew who he had met on the train and where he could meet Him again.

Make Me a Blessing

We all love ourselves more than other people, but we care more about their opinions than our own. Because of this we tend to do, or not do, things which maybe right in our conscience.
But, doing the right thing is a priority in Christian life, following Jesus' way. He said  Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
Luke 3:11
Isiaah 1 verses 17-20 lay it out clearly as well.
Pastor David Jacobs, commenting on these verses from Isiaah says -
"It is not easy for the oppressed to stand up for themselves. Think about the downtrodden and unfortunate in history: the slaves in Egypt and the Americas, the Holocaust, or the plight of women in some parts of the world. It is difficult to hear their voices because they have no power. Nobody is listening. It is our duty, according to Isaiah, to listen and find a solution".
What other people think should not matter. When Jesus ate with the tax men, he knew what others were thinking but that did not bother Him. Healing on a Sabbath was considered wrong but that did not stop Him.
Serving people who are in need is an opportunity. An opportunity to be a blessing.

Remember this song we sang in Sunday school? We asked to become a blessing.

Make Me a Blessing
Out in the highways and byways of life,
many are weary and sad;
Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife
making the sorrowing glad.
Make me a blessing,
Make me a blessing,
Out of my life
May Jesus shine;
Make me a blessing, O savior, I pray,
Make me a blessing to someone today.
Give as 'twas given to you in your need;
Love as the Master loved you;
Be to the helpless a helper indeed;
Unto your mission be true.

No Place Like Home!

Dorothy Gale from the 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz said, "There's no place like home":
In the movie's final scene, Dorothy wakes up in her bed and says this line after being transported to Oz by a tornado.
The phrase is often used to express the feeling of comfort and familiarity that comes from being at home.
We all may have repeated this line quite a few times in the past. But today, let us think about this: where do we think is our home?
  Is it this? The earth.

                                    Or this? Paradise.
If it is paradise where we want to live, we have to work towards it.
First, we have to find the way and the way is clearly mentioned in John 14:6, where Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. There is no way we can get there on our own. We need Jesus.
Second, we must prepare ourselves by changing, ourselves, people and life around us. We cannot have a dual personality - one for the earth and one for paradise. Unfortunately the cares of this world and its pressures create an "anti-paradisical" personality in every one of us. But Once we know our home, we need to change. We must behave here as our home in paradise expects us to. This is done by emulating Jesus on earth so that we live with Him at home.
Remember what Philips Brooks said -
"Be such a man, and live such a life, that if every man were such as you, and every life a life like yours, this earth would (still) be God's Paradise".
As we prepare to live in our home, we stop dreading death and instead view it as the gateway to heaven.
Finally, we must remember that each one of us, individually, has to pave our own path to paradise. No one can be responsible for us. The responsibility and onus are ours.

The Pilate Syndrome

Pontius Pilate: To Jesus
And what is 'truth'? Is truth unchanging law? We both have truths. Are mine the same as yours?
What is truth? Pilate’s answer to his own question could be a question asked in despair. How do we know right and wrong, good and evil, what is the right thing to do in any situation? How can anyone believe in a universal truth that transcends this world of suffering and despair?
Whatever his motive, he didn't get an answer because the truth was right there, standing in front of him.
Today we, like Pilate, do not recognize the truth. The truth was standing in front of Pilate, to be judged to die or to live.
Bob Kaylor says "For Pilate, anything that got him advanced in status in the eyes of the emperor was truth. Truth is whatever you decide it is, whatever is most pragmatic, kind of like throwing darts at the wall and drawing targets around them. Actually, Pilate would have been right at home in the 21st century, where truth is always relative."
Yes, we are mostly in what we can call the Pilate Syndrome:
The Pilate syndrome is a term used to describe the tension between the voice of truth and the world powers. It can also refer to the idea that people are desensitized to scandals and wash their hands of their civic responsibility.
We practice relative truths, making the truth very convenient. We justify our deeds, our wars, our destruction of nature, of human relationships and most of all destruction of our relationship with our God - our creator - all in the name of "truth".
We have the truth in our Bibles, yet we ask - What is truth? The Bible is right in front of us, yet we search for the truth. Instead, we should put our trust in God, in Jesus and His word and see (not seek) the truth work in our lives.
Billy Graham spoke truly when he said - "Truth is not found in the majority vote. Truth is found in the Word of God."

Quotable Quotes

We have often said a single quote can teach us more than a sermon. Today's quotes are on the theme of faith -
"It is not the magnitude of our actions but the amount of love that is put into them that matters." - Mother Teresa
"Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light." - Helen Keller
"It is this belief in a power larger than myself and other than myself which allows me to venture into the unknown and even the unknowable." - Maya Angelou
"What is to give light must endure the burning."
- Eleanor Roosevelt
"In God's eyes our words have only the value of our actions." - St. Ignatius Loyola
"Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." - Martin Luther King Jr.
"What does the Lord require?
Only to act justly
and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God." - Micah 6:8
"Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark." - Rabindranath Tagore
"Each activity of daily life in which we stretch ourselves on behalf of others is a prayer in action." - Richard J. Foster
God has not called me to be successful; God has called me to be faithful." - Mother Teresa
"Prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God." - St. Teresa of Avila
Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe." - Voltaire
Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservation." - D. Elton Trueblood
As you practice counting your blessings, you will find that your faith is being suddenly revitalized." - Robert Schuller
“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” - Corrie ten Boom
"Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. It is the belief that God will do what is right." - Max Lucado

Our Legacy

I cannot forget a Book by Robin Sharma called "Who will cry when you die". The title inspired me to think, and often I ask myself the same question: who will cry when I die? Maybe not literally, but who will genuinely grieve?
Apart from my family and a couple of friends, I really can't count any. We are so involved with self and careers and God knows what else, we forget to carve out a legacy of good which can live on after us. But why should we?
Because "Life" is not a career; life is not about just us. There is nothing wrong about doing things for us but that is not the end. Life is the means to the end but life is living in harmony with the world around us. Taking care of the world and people around us. Using our talents wisely for the benefit of others. Thats how we can create a legacy.
Creating a legacy is about making a lasting impact that transcends your lifetime. It involves living with intention and purpose, and making contributions that benefit others
Hebrews 13:16 says "And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased".
Everything we have comes from above. Do we even stop to give thanks? Do we share it with others? Do we become a channel of His blessing and grace to others? Do we even want anyone to remember us?
Note the word "sacrifices" and "sharing" in the verse.
Pastor Rajiv has already talked about sacrificial giving or sharing in earlier posts and clearly defined what it means to give and more so, what is sacrificial giving.
Careers and material things will end one day as will life itself. What will last will be the legacy we leave. Can we start creating it today?

What part of the word did you put into practice today?

Joshua 1: 7-9
“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. 8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

What part of God's word did you put into practice today?

You have read your Bible, said your prayers, meditated and possibly taken notes as well. Of all God's word that we read and quote, which ones have we actually put into practice? It is important because that "practice" is called obedience. And that is what the quoted verse is talking about.

Second, let us not interpret Gods word, because we often interpret it to suit ourselves. For example, a lie is a lie. It's not a small lie, nor a big lie, nor a harmless lie, and so on. As the quoted scripture says, " do not turn from the word to the left or to the right".

The motivation to "bend" the word is often fear. Following Gods word has its own responsibilities which can overwhelm us. For example, telling the truth about something may get us into temporary trouble or discomfort. Most people who get pulled up for speeding will deny and argue, to avoid the penalty. Again, the quoted verse encourages us to not let fear overcome our resolve to obey. For as long as we are willing to obey, we have God with us, each step of the way.

The difference between the man who built his house on the rock and the one who built it on sand is essentially this: both heard His word. One obeyed and one did not.
