The Old Man by the Sea: A Short Story

Yesterday was a stormy day for me. Full of challenges and problems I just could not resolve. My economic condition was close to bankruptcy and my personal life was in shambles. This morning, I got up, lonely, tired and feeling hopeless, staring at certain disaster.
So, I took a walk at the seashore near where I live, sat on a bench, my head in my hands and contemplated a ruined life and what it would look like.
At first I didn't notice the old man who was also taking a walk though I did see him in the distance, till I felt him sit beside me with a sigh. He must have walked a long way, I guess.
After a few minutes of silence, he asked - "enjoying nature, are you? Are you a nature person?"
Not being in the mood to strike up a conversation I simply said "no".
He says- "yeah, you are young and young people take life for granted and laughed".
I said "don't assume things. There are so many young people who love nature and work towards its sustainability".
"Sure", he says. "But do you see that little girl collecting seashells?" Sure" I said.
"Well, you must have done that too when you were a kid".
"Yes" I said. Why?
"So, tell me what are seashells and how aren't hey made?
I thought about it for a while and finally said I don't know.
"You see", he says, Seashells are essentially the external skeletons of marine mollusks. These fascinating structures are created through a biological process called biomineralization. With time, layers get added to the structure the process for them. But these days Ocean acidification, caused by increased absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, can make it harder for mollusks to build and maintain their shells. It is a complex process, just as human conception, birth and growth is complex".
Ok that's nice to know but what's the point?
Well, he says, "when I was walking up, I couldn't help but notice that you seemed to be weighed down by some big problem".
"Yes that's why I came here to find solitude and time to think".
He sort of simply ignored my hint and went on talking.
"I guess you don't have friends you can talk to and who could help you out? Parents, brother, sister?"
"No, first it's too personal to tell friends, I don't have parents since they have passed and my brother lives in a different sphere. In any case even if someone was there, they couldn't help me since my problem and liabilities are too big and too complicated. So, no. I have no one who can help".
"Hmmm.... says the old man. May I do know someone".
"Yeah sure" I thought to myself.
"You see what I told you about the seashell is a very complicated process of creation and its evolution. Much more complicated than your problem. Humans think that the theory of evolution explains creation, but even that theory had to have a start point right? No one really has been able to pinpoint that start point. How did it all start".
"Look sir", I said, "these questions are too complex, and I am not a scientist as maybe you are, but right now I am in no frame of mind to understand creation".
"Sure, he says, I understand that. But I am telling you all this because I want to highlight two things which are related to your problem:
1. Creation, whichever way you look at it, had a start point - someone somewhere designed it and made it a suitable process to evolve, improve and continue.
2. As you rightly said, it is complex and complicated and actually too humongous for human minds to wrap their heads around.
What I am trying to tell you is that today, your problem is minuscule to the creator of this universe. Second, when the creator created, he didn't just leave it alone. He stuck around to replenish, strengthen and tend to it.
Being that, maybe you should have a chat with Him and ask for His help.
"Hah! You talk as if you know this creator!" I exclaimed.
"Well, I do know Him but you have to go find Him yourself. In fact, if you ask, He will find you".
"Huh? Why should he? It's my problem not His. And of course, I understand you are talking about God. See I am not a church person. Never have been. So am not the favored gentry".
"Sure, but you see since you are His creation, your problem is also his problem, if you share it. Life, wealth, possessions are all his creation. And he uses His creation to solve the problems of what and who he has created.
Also, He does not have an address or a church or a building. He is everywhere. Right now, in fact, He is here, watching over that little girl collecting the seashells. He is stopping the big waves from coming here and washing her away (notice how calm is the sea). He is keeping away the sharks. In short, she is right now in his arms, protected, as she plays".
"If u think He can help, go ahead and just say to him in your heart, I invite you to come and help me. That's how simple it is".
"I don't understand. If he wants to help, why doesn't he just do it?"
"Because my young friend, He does nothing unless invited to do it. He has given you free choice. Take or leave it".
With that he got up, looked at his watch and said he needed to meet someone, a real estate agent. We said bye and I held out my hand and said "BTW my name is Jay".
He did not shake hands, but he said, "well I am old enough to call you, my son. Goodbye now and remember what I said".
As he walked away and faded into the horizon, I kept thinking of what he said. "oh well, why not give it a try? I have nothing to lose".
So I looked into the setting sun, at the beauty of the ocean and the golden colors all around and I said to myself - "well God, I don't know what to say but since you seem to know everything I am told, you know my problem. Help me. Show me".
That night I was able to sleep and get up cheerful for some odd reason, since I had nothing to be cheerful about.
That was a Wednesday. For the next 4 days I kept getting a feeling about attending some church, any church. A feeling which became so strong that on Saturday night I googled the nearest church and decided to attend it.
The next day, dressed in my Sunday best as dad had taught me, I did go. Turns out there was a guest speaker, (call him Mr. Jones). He was a suave, bright and cheerful gent who started his talk with something like this:
"Good morning church!" Getting no response and like all text book speakers, he repeated his wish till a few folks responded.
"I am a real estate broker, a shark and a cutthroat businessman. At least I was as most of you would know.
But today, I am a different person. I am a human being, and a believer..."
And he went on to talk about his transition from being a materialist and selfish individual to become a follower of Christ and an intense believer.
"God has big shoulders", he says so he could handle anything and any questions we have. After all, even Jesus questioned him in the garden that night. Let me quote a popular speaker - Francis Taylor.
Everyone goes through periods of scarcity, pain, trouble, death and losses. It is at such times, when we are heavily burdened that we seek a lighter load. God has broad shoulders indeed.
For us pain is always unwanted, loss and heartbreak is our worst enemy. But let me tell you - He is always there. Ready to protect and preserve us for His kingdom. So - Let us then dwell in the shadow of the Almighty.
The God I serve made paupers into queens, slaves into officials, shepherds into great leaders and took a very, very, very old man and used him to save the world".
After church as people were meeting and greeting, something nudged me to go talk to him as his words intrigued me. So, I did.
He met me well, and I commented about his testimony, which really excited him. Slowly I realized that under earlier circumstances I would not trust him with a banana let alone my money, if I had. But in front of me was a different person - honestly talking about his past life, showing repentance and talking about a bright future.
"Say what about you? What do u do?"
"I am a software developer" I said.
"Oh? Wonderful, making pots of money eh?"
"Hardly" I said. "In fact, it's so bad that I am not even able to pay my mortgage".
Suddenly I realized I had told him my whole story. I don't know why.
"Hey maybe you can talk to the bank and get an extension".
"Already did. They refused as I was overdue 60,000 dollars since over 90 days".
Alright, where is your house?
30, Waverly Street.
How much is your loan amount?
200,000 dollars.
"Ok Pal, Waverly Street homes are getting an equity upwards of 300K USD. Go to your bank, ask them to advance you 75000 against that equity, pay them their outstanding and use the rest to live for the month. Once you are done with that come to my office, I need a software made to run campaigns for my customers. You make that for me and I won't pay you, but I will sign off any rights to the software and introduce you to some friends to who you can sell the software and others who need it. Believe me the demand is very high for these things".
I could not believe my ears. I dare not even think that this was possible.
Yet there he was, giving me a solution I did not dream existed.
"But how do you know about Waverly Drive? Do you live there?"
"No" he said, "but yesterday (and what a co-incidence) I had met a client who wanted to invest in real estate and asked my how much equity got built up on houses on Waverly drive. I did not know so I went to the estate office to check and that's how I know"
That night I prayed, for the first time.

Do You Know the Shepherd?

Psalm 23
There is an old story about Psalm 23 (though we can't say if it is true) and which teaches a beautiful lesson.
It goes like this:
Once there was a fund raiser in which a famous actor was the Chief Guest. He gave his speech, did a couple of performences of his famous dialogues and then invited questions. Someone in the audience asked him if he knew Psalm 23. To this he replied in the affirmative saying he had to memorise it as a child. Another person piped up and asked him to recite it.
The actor then proceeded to recite Psalm 23, in his deep baritone voice complete with facial expressions and voice modulation. Slowly, deliberately serious and with actions.
When he finished there was thunderous applause and a standing ovation.
After the applause died down, someone spied an old priest sitting in the corner. He raised a call for the priest to recite Psalm 23 as well, a call which caught on till the the entire hall was echoing with that demand.
The priest slowly got up, so slowly one could probably have heard his bones. He walked upto the stage, took the mike and, in a weak, cracked voice which promised to fail any time and with a teary expression proceeded to recite the Psalm. When he finished he got the standard polite applause.
At dinner that evening someone asked the actor what he thought of the priests recital viz a viz his own.
"Oh that's easy" said the actor. "I knew the Psalm but he knew the shepherd".
Today, we can well ask ourselves - Do we know the shepherd or just the Psalm?

What's in it for Me?

“Religion today is not transforming people— it is being transformed by people. It is not raising the moral level of society— it is descending to society's own level and congratulating itself that it has scored a victory because society is smiling, accepting its surrender.” - A. W. TOZER (1897-1963)
These words reflect the true state of society and Christianity today. As Christians, do we embody Christianity? Or do we take what is convenient and ignore or justify the rest.
Christianity is not a convenience. It is a way of life to be led by emulating Christ for the Glory of our Father in Heaven. Don't we pray that? When we help someone in need is it for Gods glory or our own? When we perform church activities, is it for our own name to be up in lights or for the body of Christ? When we pray for someone to be healed is it for Gods glory or because we just like that person? Do we use the church as a social and networking platform or THE house of God? Do we follow Christ with a zero agenda ?
The fact is today's society views every thing with the lens of WIFM (what's in it for me) instead of "what's in it for God".
We cant pick and choose as we do. Living the Christian life means going out of our comfort zone and our "convenience zone", with a zero agenda. It means taking a step back from self glorification.
Christianity is not supposed to be the surrender of the church but our own surrender to God. It can involve surrendering small things throughout the day, or surrendering bigger things like hopes and dreams. Are we ready for that or is it an inconvenience?

The Coffee Story

The coffee story is quite a common analogy to human nature. If you are carrying a cup of hot coffee and someone jostles your hand, the coffee in the cup (or whatever is in it) spills over.
Similarly, in humans, hidden feelings, frustrations, fear etc spill over and out of us when our life is jostled by circumstances or someone's behaviour. We can take some ones advice negatively and react or some thing which hurts us.
In our life stresses and "jostles" are inevitable.
Consider the cup to be the heart and mind and whatever is in it to be the coffee. Whatever we fill in the cup is what will spill out, when jostled.
King David's cup ran over with Gods goodness and provision in his life because he recognised God. He understood His works. He talked, God answered and he listened. David was Gods friend. King David's heart was filled with God. His cup ran over with God.
Today let us meditate on ourselves: when we are under stress what spills out of our cup? Can I fill my heart with the Spirit of God rather than anger, abuse and violence so that when I am jostled, His spirit spills over?
"You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup runneth over. ."

The Atheist: A Short Story

This is a story about Zaver, an atheist and scientist, and a strange journey. Zaver had to travel to another city to present a lecture on Natural Phenomena, a journey of about two hours from his home. As he boarded the train and took his seat, he started thinking about his lecture, trying to remember examples he could use.
As the train stopped at the next station, a man boarded and sat on the seat next to Zaver. "Good morning, Zaver," he smiled and said.
Startled, Zaver smiled and asked, "Do I know you?"
"No, Zaver, you don't. But I know you from the beginning."
"Ah, you must have known my parents then."
"Yes, I did. In fact, your whole family knew me well. I am a close family friend."
"Oh, you must be from the church. They were regulars at the church."
"Yes. I was in the church too. But I don't see you in church these days?"
"No. I am a scientist and an atheist. I don't believe in God."
"Oh? Well, I suppose scientists do have all the answers, but I'm just curious to know why you don't believe in God. After all, your whole family were very strong believers."
"Well, I think God is just a figment of our minds when we want to explain what we don't understand. Those incredible stories in the Bible are just that. Stories without any credibility! Take that one of the parting of the Red Sea. Come on... I bet that river was shallow and coincidentally there was a flash flood as the Egyptian army tried to cross. Then the story of a dead man coming back to life. Preposterous!"
"Ah, I see you really know your Bible. You really can explain things logically as well."
"Yes," said Zaver, "I was a regular at church and Sunday school till age 16 when I realized that the Bible was nothing but a book on the improbable."
"Oh, I see. But tell me, said the man, "how heavy is an airplane?"
"Why, it would be about 800,000 pounds or more. Why?"
"I was just wondering how an 800,000-pound object can fly in the air. You scientists and engineers really are brilliant."
"Well, to get an 800,000-pound plane off the ground and fly, you need jet engines and fuel and a lot of engineering. It's... complicated."
"Yes, it does seem to be. But tell me another thing, how heavy is a cloud?"
"A cloud? Why, at the very least about a million pounds, going up to about a billion pounds for a very, very large and heavy cloud."
"Then, Zaver, tell me how does a cloud, which is more than the weight of an aircraft, float and move around in the sky without any jets, or engines, or engineering, or any other visible means of propulsion? How come a cloud doesn't fall out of the sky?"
"Well, sir, that's nature. It's the vapor from the earth which causes heat, which causes the cloud to expand so that it becomes lighter than its surrounding air, and hence it can fly. It's complicated."
"Yes, I am sure it is. But you talked about the parting of the Red Sea. Just FYI, there is a scientific explanation for that as well. But just for you to know, science is another word for 'creation.' But creation minus justice."
"But about parting the Red Sea, it was done by a 'negative' storm surge caused by a Medicane. So you see, it was not all that improbable as your mind thinks it is."
"And as far as the clouds go, where does the vapor come from? Who created nature?"
"Now to answer a very serious question you posed - can a dead man become alive? You are a scientist and you must have read or heard about the delayed return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Of course, this does not apply to a God. How about you get science to explain why Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valley shoots blood-red water into a river? Maybe it will explain Egypt. Remember, explain the why and not the how. Similarly, Hessdalen Lights in Norway, Catatumbo lightning in Venezuela, the glow worm caves, or stones that float and sail."
Zaver smiled and was about to interject when the man said, "Well, the next stop is mine. I hope you do well and all the very best for your lecture."
He got up and started to leave.
Zaver said, "I hope we meet again."
"Oh, I am sure we will."
With that, he got off the train as Zaver called out after him, "Sir, what is your name?"
The man looked back and smiled and disappeared in the crowd.
As the train moved on, Zaver lapsed into a thoughtful silence, his mind full of his strange encounter and what the man had said.
When he awoke, his station had come, and he got off to be met by his old friend Abe. They hugged warmly, and Abe said, "Zaver, you look great. Got a facial today, did you? Hope to meet someone interesting?"
"No," said Zaver. "Why do you say that?"
"You seem to have a glow on your face I've never seen before. But let's hurry or we will be late."
Zaver ascended the dais as he was introduced and took his position at the speaker's lectern. He opened his notes on "Social Constructionism" & began his speech. He stared at the paper and began speaking, without looking at his notes.
"Science, my friends, is nothing but an attempt of man to understand creation. The Big Bang Theory is a good explanation of how it all started, but it does not explain why it started and who started that first bang... recently, we discovered the world's oldest pyramid in Indonesia. It is perfectly sculpted, but, and here is the shocker: there is no evidence of human intervention. Who made that pyramid and why? How is not important. One day, science will find out for sure, but till then, my friends, we can only wonder and believe..."
As he continued his speech, he locked eyes with the audience, and especially one man, the man he met on the train, who sat in the middle, just smiling and nodding.
Zaver never referred to his notes again during his speech. He spoke as if in a dream as he continued, "...you see, there is no technology which has no single point of failure without duplication and redundancy. But, oddly enough, creation has no single point of failure and no redundancy. There has to be a creator of all this ... who engineered this world - from the tallest mountains to the tiniest bit of grass and gave each one a purpose in the creation. Science has maybe understood but 10% of creation. Who controls it and how? Can these creatures we know so well communicate? Some studies say they do. We do not know. I do remember a passage from some book which said, and I quote..."
"And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying, 'To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!'"
As Zaver went on, the entire audience sat spellbound, shocked by his thoughts and revelations. Only one man smiled through it all and then slipped away into the darkness of the hall.
At the conference lunch, Zaver was thronged by the attendees who had some serious questions. While he tried to answer them he himself had so many questions to ask, so many ideas and doubts. His head throbbed as if with some newfound discovery. He desperately sought the strange man but he was nowhere to be found.
As he left the hall, Zaver smiled to himself. He knew he would meet that man again and he looked forward to it. Suddenly he stopped. He just remembered from which book he had quoted that passage. It was the Bible.
Another passage wafted into his head, a memory from his childhood:
"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come".
Zaver then knew who he had met on the train and where he could meet Him again.
