How Our Families Shape Our Faith

Most of us don’t realize that the very first theological framework we ever build isn’t constructed in a seminary or a church pew. It’s built around the kitchen table. Long before we learn to read a Bible, we learn to read the people raising us.

There is a stark, sometimes terrifying reality to how our human relationships define our spiritual imagination. Consider this incredibly candid reflection from a life spent working closely with families, from Ms. Francis Taylor who says -

"Just as I trusted my father to be there when I needed him, I trust God to be there. My father couldn't prevent disappointments or trouble from coming my way, neither can God. However, both fathers were there to see me through them, by my side all the way. God assures us that his love and his presence is everlasting. God is faithful even when we are not. I am well aware that not everyone has had a father's presence in their lives for so many different reasons. One of my grandsons was only 2 when his father died, and I am so proud of my daughter-in-law for letting him know that his father loved him. Some children have suffered at the hands of their parents, and this experience makes it difficult to trust God. When I would work with parents, I always reminded the Dad's that the first prayer most of us learn is the "Our Father" and that their children will judge God by their experience with their own father. I do realize that I was fortunate, and I encourage any men who read this to think about the connection their children will have between their behavior and God's. Even if you are not always able to be present, make sure that your children know of your love for them and that you have placed them under the protection of the Father".

But understand one fact: God is not an extension of our earthly parents. Our parents were meant to be an extension of Him.
Today, as parents, we have the profound privilege of rewriting the spiritual filter for the next generation.

Living with Intentionality

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things
Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

Every human being has a daily choice - to live randomly or live intentionally with purpose.
As Christians, we are to live intentionally or with intentionality, which is a life according to God's plan, Gods word and Gods purpose.
But the most intense Christian faces an enemy within himself - the mind. The mind is random and leads us into thoughts which create fear, uncertainty and doubt. Or lead us into dreams based on untruths. The mind can take us into a false paradise or into a false hell. No matter how logical or intelligent we are, reaching a conclusion based on truth is an uphill task because each of us has a different truth - governed by logic and probability - and which is changing constantly. So what does one do? Where do we anchor our minds?
The answer is obvious: Gods truth and Gods word is constant. Never changing.
But, while we can try and anchor in the word of God, the outside world still crowds our minds - and uncertainty and doubts and fears still assail us. We therefore need a filter for our minds - not to block out world but to live within this world and yet let only His word dwell in our minds because that's where it all starts.
We therefore need a filter and the quoted verse tells us how to create that filter, with knowledge of the Word of God. That is where Christian maturity comes in.
Maturity is the ability to choose your thoughts rather than letting your thoughts choose you. You are the gatekeeper of your imagination, and you have the authority to deny entry to any thought that does not align with the peace of God. When you intentionally focus on what is true, lovely, and of a good report, you are not simply ignoring the harsh realities of life; you are choosing to dwell in a higher reality that governs the lower one. Because God has your life and it's actions in His hand. We don't. Therefore, He creates the reality, we don't. If he has promised healing - it will happen. If He has promised abundance it will happen. But: In His wisdom and His time.
Basis this, spiritual maturity is found in the believer who has learned to shut the door on spiraling unreal, anxious thoughts before they have a chance to take root and grow into a harvest of panic. Strengthening your walk involves a daily cleaning of the mental filter by washing your mind with the Word. As you choose to think on these things, you will find that your outlook becomes bright and your spirit becomes resilient against the storms of life. Let your mind be a sanctuary of hope that reflects the light of Christ to a dark world. Yield your focus to the leading of the Holy Spirit today and watch how He transforms your perspective.

Why Did it Have to be Me?

“The Lord trieth the righteous.” — Psalm 11:5 (KJV)
Have you ever been down into the depths of loss or heartbreak, suffering or complete disaster? When the only question in your head is "why me"? When you feel like you are being threshed literally with no escape?
It can be a heartbreaking thought - "I never hurt anyone, I tried to follow our Lord, I tried to do all the right things and I never hurt anyone knowingly. Then why? Why did it have to be me?"
Well, it had to be you for the very reasons you feel it should not have been: Your belief, faith & trust in the Lord.
This is not a dichotomy. This is the reality of our faith. We are entrusted with a mission because God sees our strength and faith in Him & knows we can see it through with His help.
Here is a lesson we can learn from wheat! Wheat, while nestled safely in its husk, is of no use to the one who planted it. Only through threshing—through the shaking, beating, and separating—does its true value emerge. So, it is with the righteous.
God, in His wisdom, sees the treasure hidden beneath our comfort, the strength forged in our struggles, the ministry birthed from our pain. “The Lord trieth the righteous”—not to shame, but to shape. Not to expose, but to expand. Not to destroy but to protect.
Every trial is a tool. Every hardship is a holy invitation. What feels like breaking is often God’s way of building. He threshes us from the husk of self-reliance, pride, and fear, so that we might grow rich toward Him—full of faith, compassion, and purpose.
And here’s the miracle: Trials become testimonies. Testimonies become ministries. Ministries become movements.
And Movements are what happen when one person’s story ignites faith in many. It’s the ripple effect of grace—where healing multiplies, hope spreads, and lives are transformed beyond what we could imagine. What began as pain becomes purpose, and what began as personal becomes powerful. Your story, once marked by suffering, becomes a light for someone else’s path. What once wounded you now equips you to heal. That’s the divine exchange—pain into purpose, ashes into beauty.
So, my friend, if you’re in the middle of the threshing floor, take heart. You are not being discarded—you are being refined. You may not want this. You may hate it. You may fear the journey. But God does not expose you to the elements of this world to harm you. He is drawing out the wheat, the worth, the witness within you. He is healing you, building you and creating a witness for Himself because you become His Living Testimony.
