Which is the bigger wonder? Gods' faithfulness or our unbelief? 

He keeps his promise a thousand times, and yet the next trial makes us doubt him.

We are as continually vexed with anxieties, molested with suspicions, and disturbed with fears, as if our God were the mirage of the desert.

Yet as we read Isiaah we see He says -
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands. — Isaiah 49:16

. “I have graven thee.” It does not say, “your name.” The name is there, but that is not all: our person, our image, our case, our circumstances, our sins, our temptations, our weaknesses, our wants, our works; He has graven us, everything about us, all that concerns us.

With this understanding will we ever say again that our God has forsaken us or forgotten us, when he has "graven" us upon his own palms?

The Key to Blessings: Daily Reflections

Isiaah 58:6-11 says - 

6“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
10 If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
11 The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Today I read an ad from a non profit which had a picture of a little girl with tears. Someone asked her are you a Muslim, Hindu, Christian or Sikh etc. And she simply replies, "I am hungry".

A very sad ad that was. But so much truth in it. The quoted verses are as true today as they were thousands of years ago during Isaiah's time.

And that's the thing: we want God to give but we are not willing to share. The quoted verses make it quite clear- God entrusts us with more when we are willing to use His blessings to make sure no one we know is hungry, or is insecure or without a job, or sick or in any sort of situation which is leaving him/ her in hunger or fear of something.

You may say God said that to Israel as a nation. Sure. But who makes up a nation? Ordinary people like you and me. If we don't do it at our small level, how can any nation do it on a national scale? And how can we ever have a hunger free, terror free, educated world?

So tonight when we pray to our God, let's make sure we at least pray for others and while we ask for His blessings on finance, jobs etc., keep in mind the key to getting those blessings : sharing our blessings and caring for others. Lets resolve to wipe each tear away from people around us.

He never promised a Rose Garden: Pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflections

 Remember Isiaah when he said - 

"But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint. but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint..."

God did not promise us a rose garden and a life of ease and comfort. Our life of "free will" ensures that we will make mistakes, many mistakes; that our enemy will attempt to derail our lives and that we will need to work hard to earn a day of leisure. This is a given. 

What He did promise us though was that, with His help, we will overcome problems, we will fly over trouble, He will sustain our strength so that we do not faint in the battle called life and finally that through Him, we will prevail.  what do we need to do? Call on Him. Acknowledge Him and ask Him. Psalm 91 14-16 says - 

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

He will call on me, and I will answer him;

I will be with him in trouble,

I will deliver him and honor him.

With long life I will satisfy him

and show him my salvation.”

Here are so many promises for us. Eight promises to be precise. Eight promises with just one condition: That we love Him and acknowledge Him. Acknowledging God means that we accept our faults, ask for His help and forgiveness and wait for His direction.

Proverbs 1:1-6 

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.


We often do not give too much importance to the book of proverbs, in comparison to the New Testament or Isiaah or other books which are highly referred to.

However today I would like to throw the spotlight on this book, because it is a guide to wisdom and who does not want to be wise?

It is written, the beginning of wisdom is the fear of God. Proverbs 1 defines wisdom in such a granular form, it leaves nothing to misinterpretation or imagination.

Proverbs 1 starts with an introduction to the Book, as in the quoted verses. It then goes onto defining wisdom, foolishness, what we need to do as wise people and what we need to guard against.

Even at this senior age, i find this so instructive and relatable, it's a wonder.
Today's foolish world needs the practice of the wisdom of God, by His people, to lead the world towards the intended utopia.

So, let us not be foolish. Let us read the Book and the entire Bible once again, this time only with the perspective of gaining Biblical wisdom. Dwell on each word, each verse and glean Gods wisdom He has left for us.

"Leprosy was a terrible disease in ancient days. There was no cure and anyone who had been diagnosed with leprosy was an outcast and had to stay away from any populated place and call out "unclean, unclean" when people came near. 

The ten lepers approached Jesus in hopes that he would heal them, and he did. Why is it that only the Samaritan returned to give thanks? I've given this some thought over the years and the only answer I could come up with is that he didn't take Jesus' healing for granted. After all, he was an outsider, and worse, he was hated by the Jews and had no reason to expect that Jesus, a Jew, would take pity on him. The other nine, presumably, were Jewish. Did they take for granted that Jesus would heal his own? 

It made me think about what I take for granted. I was born into a stable family that loved me, provided for me, and gave me a good education. We weren't well off by any standard, but we had what we needed.

I was grateful and realized that God had been very good to me, but I never really understood how much I took for granted until I went to Haiti. After ten days of using a bucket to wash my hair, no hot water, no flush toilets, having to use bottled water to brush my teeth, little electricity, sharing a concrete surround with a multitude of cockroaches while using the bucket of water for a shower, I realized just how much I took for granted! You can bet that I am much more conscious of not wasting water or electricity than I used to be. 

My trip to Tanzania reinforced my gratitude for the blessing of being born where I was. I feel like one of the nine who didn't return and try each day to remember to say thank you for all the gifts God has given me".

The question is are we like the one Samaritan or like the 9 others? 

Deferred hope: Pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflection

Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

This is so true. We pray for something earnestly, again and again, maybe for days and maybe for years, but It is not granted. We feel sick with disappointment and lose hope, gain fear and lose trust in God. 

But that maybe a mistake, because God acts in His own time, in His own wisdom. So, we have to abide by that and trust Him, so has hitherto been with us.

What could be worse than the situation of Job? Yet He never gave up on God. People mocked him, wife scorned Him, yet he was faithful.

When we are in a situation when our hope is deferred, remember Job. God sees the whole picture while we can see only our piece. Scripture tells us that God has a plan for us. It is up to us to remain faithful, knowing that our lives will fit perfectly into God’s picture.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and example is better than instruction. If we believe this, we can live a life of preaching Gods word, maybe not through great wonderful sermons, or through deep knowledge of the Bible, but simply, quietly, through our life and the way we live it.

The Christian life is not life of theory but a life of action. You may have no talents (probably not true), but you still have a choice. The choice to live out the life of a believer or to live as an unlit lamp which gives no light to the weary even if kept on the highest mountain.

Simply put, being genuinely happy and joyous and showing it is reflecting our gratitude and satisfaction with God in our lives. In this sad dark world, a smile will invite others to share our peace. A helping hand will go a long way in bringing Him to someone. We don't have to preach at the drop of a hat. We just need to show and demonstrate that we have the peace the world so greatly wants and needs.

Today look back and count and see what God has given you. Explicitly and implicitly. Count your blessing and smile. And make someone else smile too.

The Hedge: Pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflections

Most of us have read or know of, the story of Job. But that story has an interesting fine print which some may not have picked up on. 

That interesting aspect of the story of Job is the fact that satan could not attack Job because of a "hedge" God had put around him for his protection and blessing as is evidenced when satan says to God- 

"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has...."(Job 1:10)

This concept of Gods hedge of protection is very real. The Contemporary English Version (CEV) translates Job 1:10 this way:

"You are like a wall protecting not only him, but his entire family and all his property"

This hedge is multi-dimensional. It protects us from external dangers and protects us from ourselves. The fact is We are our own worst enemy. God has to protect us from us. To do this, he may create a hedge that makes it difficult to engage in the behavior that he knows is not good for us. He may put obstacles or thorns in the way, as was in the case of the Hosea. Sounds familiar?

Thirdly thus hedge protects us from recklessness, coming from a combination of the first two.

Psalm 34:7 defines the hedge of protection very well - 

"The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them"

If you have thus hedge of protection around, that's great and if not pray for it.

God will plant the hedge around us, but we need to water it with prayer, so it grows and thrives. The entire Psalm 91 is a prayer for this protection.

Satan could not get to Job till God removed that hedge. Remember that always.

The Evidence: pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflections

"And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul". — 1 Samuel 27:1

How many times have we all not thought or said that?

The thought of David’s heart at this time was a false thought, because he certainly had no ground for thinking that God’s anointing him by Samuel was intended to be left as an empty unmeaning act. On no one occasion had the Lord deserted his servant; he had been placed in perilous positions very often, but not one instance had occurred in which divine interposition had not delivered him.

David could not put his finger upon any entry in his diary, and say of it, “Here is evidence that the Lord will forsake me,” for the entire tenor of his past life proved the very reverse.

Is it not just in the same way that we doubt God’s help? Is it not mistrust without a cause? Have we ever had the shadow of a reason to doubt our Father’s goodness? Have not his loving kindnesses been marvelous? Has he once failed to justify our trust?

No! our God has not left us at any time. We have had dark nights, and have gone through many trials, but never to our detriment, always to our advantage; and the conclusion from our past experience is, that he who has been with us in six troubles, will not forsake us in the seventh.

The problem is we don't remember His faithfulness after we are delivered, so it does not count as experience. Make a diary. Keep a record. Pray and thank. Book that day when He raised His shield over our heads.

Then like David let us be able to say "You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to You and not be silent"
