Deferred hope: Pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflection

Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

This is so true. We pray for something earnestly, again and again, maybe for days and maybe for years, but It is not granted. We feel sick with disappointment and lose hope, gain fear and lose trust in God. 

But that maybe a mistake, because God acts in His own time, in His own wisdom. So, we have to abide by that and trust Him, so has hitherto been with us.

What could be worse than the situation of Job? Yet He never gave up on God. People mocked him, wife scorned Him, yet he was faithful.

When we are in a situation when our hope is deferred, remember Job. God sees the whole picture while we can see only our piece. Scripture tells us that God has a plan for us. It is up to us to remain faithful, knowing that our lives will fit perfectly into God’s picture.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and example is better than instruction. If we believe this, we can live a life of preaching Gods word, maybe not through great wonderful sermons, or through deep knowledge of the Bible, but simply, quietly, through our life and the way we live it.

The Christian life is not life of theory but a life of action. You may have no talents (probably not true), but you still have a choice. The choice to live out the life of a believer or to live as an unlit lamp which gives no light to the weary even if kept on the highest mountain.

Simply put, being genuinely happy and joyous and showing it is reflecting our gratitude and satisfaction with God in our lives. In this sad dark world, a smile will invite others to share our peace. A helping hand will go a long way in bringing Him to someone. We don't have to preach at the drop of a hat. We just need to show and demonstrate that we have the peace the world so greatly wants and needs.

Today look back and count and see what God has given you. Explicitly and implicitly. Count your blessing and smile. And make someone else smile too.

The Hedge: Pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflections

Most of us have read or know of, the story of Job. But that story has an interesting fine print which some may not have picked up on. 

That interesting aspect of the story of Job is the fact that satan could not attack Job because of a "hedge" God had put around him for his protection and blessing as is evidenced when satan says to God- 

"Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has...."(Job 1:10)

This concept of Gods hedge of protection is very real. The Contemporary English Version (CEV) translates Job 1:10 this way:

"You are like a wall protecting not only him, but his entire family and all his property"

This hedge is multi-dimensional. It protects us from external dangers and protects us from ourselves. The fact is We are our own worst enemy. God has to protect us from us. To do this, he may create a hedge that makes it difficult to engage in the behavior that he knows is not good for us. He may put obstacles or thorns in the way, as was in the case of the Hosea. Sounds familiar?

Thirdly thus hedge protects us from recklessness, coming from a combination of the first two.

Psalm 34:7 defines the hedge of protection very well - 

"The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them"

If you have thus hedge of protection around, that's great and if not pray for it.

God will plant the hedge around us, but we need to water it with prayer, so it grows and thrives. The entire Psalm 91 is a prayer for this protection.

Satan could not get to Job till God removed that hedge. Remember that always.

The Evidence: pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflections

"And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul". — 1 Samuel 27:1

How many times have we all not thought or said that?

The thought of David’s heart at this time was a false thought, because he certainly had no ground for thinking that God’s anointing him by Samuel was intended to be left as an empty unmeaning act. On no one occasion had the Lord deserted his servant; he had been placed in perilous positions very often, but not one instance had occurred in which divine interposition had not delivered him.

David could not put his finger upon any entry in his diary, and say of it, “Here is evidence that the Lord will forsake me,” for the entire tenor of his past life proved the very reverse.

Is it not just in the same way that we doubt God’s help? Is it not mistrust without a cause? Have we ever had the shadow of a reason to doubt our Father’s goodness? Have not his loving kindnesses been marvelous? Has he once failed to justify our trust?

No! our God has not left us at any time. We have had dark nights, and have gone through many trials, but never to our detriment, always to our advantage; and the conclusion from our past experience is, that he who has been with us in six troubles, will not forsake us in the seventh.

The problem is we don't remember His faithfulness after we are delivered, so it does not count as experience. Make a diary. Keep a record. Pray and thank. Book that day when He raised His shield over our heads.

Then like David let us be able to say "You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to You and not be silent"

A Utopian world: Pastor Rajiv's Daily Reflections

Utopia describes an imaginary community or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its members. It was coined by Sir Thomas More for his 1516 book Utopia, describing a fictional island society in the New World.

While we consider Utopia as fiction, i believe it is not, because it is actually described in Revelations -

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Through this belief one can gain strength to handle the ups and downs of life on Earth, in the knowledge that it is temporary and that one day we shall be citizens of a utopian land called Heaven.

But how can we be sure we will get that citizenship? Because through our relationship with the triune and complete trust in our Lord Jesus Christ, we have received an assurance that we will or already have that blessed citizenship. On the other hand, if we do not believe that promise, then it necessarily follows that that blessed Utopia does not exist for us as well!

The choice we have is whether we live as citizens of Heaven today or citizens of earth with all its miseries and no hope...

On Whom Do you trust?

Listen to the Christian’s answer and see if it is yours. “On whom dost thou trust?” “I trust,” says the Christian, “in a triune God. I trust the Father, believing that he has chosen me from before the foundations of the world; I trust him to provide for me in providence, to teach me, to guide me, to correct me if need be, and to bring me home to his own house where the many mansions are. 

I trust the Son. Very God of very God is he—the man Christ Jesus. I trust in him to take away all my sins by his own sacrifice, and to adorn me with his perfect righteousness. I trust him to be my Intercessor, to present my prayers and desires before his Father’s throne, and I trust him to be my Advocate at the last great day, to plead my cause, and to justify me. I trust him for what he is, for what he has done, and for what he has promised yet to do. 

And I trust the Holy Spirit—he has begun to save me from my inbred sins; I trust him to drive them all out; I trust him to curb my temper, to subdue my will, to enlighten my understanding, to check my passions, to comfort my despondency, to help my weakness, to illuminate my darkness; I trust him to dwell in me as my life, to reign in me as my King, to sanctify me wholly, spirit, soul, and body, and then to take me up to dwell with the saints in light forever.”

So ask yourself today, whom do you trust? Man? The Father? The Son? The Holy Spirit? Or the Triune, working together. 

The Picture: Our Daily Reflection

One day we will all be a picture on someone's wall. Or maybe in a wallet, or in a frame on the table in someone's drawing room.

When people see the picture what will they remember? Success? Failure? Honesty? Gratitude?

I think none of the above. But they will see another picture in their minds - a picture based on characteristics exhibited by us, hopefully of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

How will we rate against these characteristics? What will our picture communicate to those who see it? Will it inspire the viewer to inculcate those traits, or will it inspire nothing?

Whatever it inspires is the legacy we will have left behind.

It is this nature that will define whether our profession of Christianity has been successful. Those who are in Christ are distinguished from unbelievers in that they have been gifted with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to bear fruit, that is the fruits of the Spirit. Our belief that we do have these is only a belief. The truth will be when others experience them in us, through our life.

Matthew 7:16-17 says - Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

So, what will we be? Will we be a picture on the wall or a picture in someone's heart? The choice is ours.

Moses, Jonah, Lot, Abraham, Elijah, and so many more had a calling from God to do His work - as many of us still do. Some of these gentlemen meekly did what they were told, and some tried to run away, just as we do.
